Prepare your brush by soaking it in warm water or run it under the tap until it absorbs enough water to kickstart the lathering of the cream or soap. The golden rule is to avoid using hot water as this can damage the brush by loosening the knot of hair in the handle.
If using a shaving cream, plop an amount of shaving cream into a bowl or dot some on the area to be shaved. Using your slightly wet shaving brush, whip the cream up into a mass of rich, creamy lather and paint the lather into your bristles.
With a shaving soap, swirl the wet brush on top of the soap puck until you feel a little resistance coming from the soap. Paint the lather into your bristles and shave as normal.
After use, rinse under running water until all traces of lather are gone, then shake off excess water and draw the brush over the towel a few times. You can hang your brush on a stand to finish drying if desired.
