Using a straight razor or cut throat razor has a certain attraction. For many it is the ultimate form of wet shaving, to use a single open razor blade to shave with. One word of caution, if you are currently using a cartridge razor, like a Gillette Mach3 or Fusion, making the jump straight to a cut throat razor may be a bit too much. Why not check out our range of Best Safety Razors for Beginners first.

If your heart is set on using a cut throat razor, then we recommend the Feather Artist SS Scotch Wood disposable blade straight razor. This razor uses disposable injector blades from Feather, which are longer, thicker and sharper than traditional safety razor blades. One great advantage of using this type of razor is that you don’t need to strop or hone it. Just replace the blades when they lose their edge, which can be up to 10 shaves. The stainless steel razor head is also easier to align correctly on the face for that perfect shave.

For those of you who want the authentic feel of steel, then the best cut throat razor to choose as a beginner is the Thiers-Issard ‘Le Dandy’ razor. Hand made in France form the finest Sheffield Steel it has an easy to use 5/8ths of an inch wide blade with round tip.

The ‘Le Dandy’ razor comes to us shave ready from Thiers-Issard, however, it will need to be stropped before each use. Don’t be tempted to go for a cheap, raw leather strop, as you need to use the strop every time you shave we recommend the Parker Latigo Leather large strop. The leather of this strop has been specially treated with oils and waxes, so it doesn’t need a strop balm or paste to be used with it.
