Styptic Pencil - A Guide On How And Why To Use One

Styptic Pencil

You may have heard of a "shaving cut stick", this is actually called a Styptic Pencil!

A styptic pencil is a medicated stick generally made of powdered crystal from an alum block and a wax binder which is pressed into a handy lipstick size and shape.

You use a Styptic Pencil to seal small cuts and nicks, especially those caused during wet shaving.

Before the days of the multi blade razor the styptic pencil was a necessary part of a man's shaving kit and was used to seal cuts caused by careless shaving, although many people still continue to use styptic pencils with their double edged safety and cut throat razors.

Styptic Pencils are used when cut yourself wet shaving. They will stop the bleeding immediately and kill bacteria.

How to use one

Take the styptic pencil and apply it directly to a bleeding cut or nick. The astringent properties of the pencil will help stop the bleeding by causing blood vessels to contract at the site of the wound.

When applied to a cut it does burn slightly, but most cuts stop bleeding in a few seconds and heal within a few minutes.

Tips on using one

Simply dab this pencil on the bleeding point and bleeding will miraculously stop!
You can use your styptic pencil if you fall victim to thorns, stinging nettles and any small cut.
Perfectly sized for home and travel, each styptic pencil is about the size of a lipstick.
