Marfin Italian Handmade Silvertip Shaving Brush #242

Out of Stock

Marfin #242
Handmade without the aid of machinery (apart from the drilled brush hole), Marco Finardi made this brush handle by carving it and polishing it with tools the like of which have been around for many centuries.
# 242 is a cross between a work of art and a highly desirable yet practical shaving brush. Marco has kept #242 simple, it's oval shaped which lends itself to a firm grip even when the handle is wet. The handle is made from highly polished Italian plateau briarwood while the knot of luxury silvertip badger hair was made in Florence, Italy by a fellow craftsman. Silvertip hair is soft yet very durable with distinctive colouring.
The grain on the handle features typical Italian briarwood swirls, sweeps and a mottled marble effect.
Stamped on the base of the pebble shaped brush is the Marfin elephant logo and 'Hand Made in Italy' along with the number 242. Marco has fashioned the base so when seated, the brush sits a slight angle.
Brush number 242 will come to you in a branded Marfin box and a signed certificate of authenticity, signed by Marco himself. This is your guarantee of quality.

Marco tells us:
Once I see an interesting piece of Italian Plateau Briarwood, I study its shape closely and imagine how the brush may look with a knot of hair. The ergonomics have to be correct as the brush has to be convenient and comfortable to use.
The root is then cut and trimmed with rasps and files before being sanded with increasingly finer sandpapers. The hole for the knot is then drilled and then the handle is coloured using natural pigments.
The handle is then sealed to make it watertight by dipping it in Tung Oil. This procedure is done in a room with a controlled temperature for a few days before it is dried over two weeks in an airy room.
The brush is then ready for polishing. No less than 4 stages of polishing is required, each stage uses an increasingly fine abrasive powder. The handle is then polished with Carnauba Wax and the knot of hair is cemented into the handle. Finally, the brush is numbered and marked with the Marfin logo. The entire process takes around 3 weeks.
