Should I buy a cut throat razor?

Q:  I am looking to buy a birthday present. He often complains that it hurts to shave (he has dark and strong hair), and was wondering if a straight bladmerkur progresse would make his shaving easier?

Also, it is a gift so it is important that the quality is excellent, but also easy to use for a first-timer- any recommendations?

I would also like to purchase a type of storing box that has everything he needs to get started any suggestions for this?

Important! do you ship to Norway?

From Nicola, Norway 4th May 2012.

A: Hi Nicola, thank you for your enquiry. Yes we do ship to Norway, in fact we ship world wide.

Going from (I assume) a modern cartridge Mach3 type razor to acut throat straight razor is a big step in terms of learning and expensive too as you need a razor, a strop, strop pastes and a honing stone. To do the job properly you will need to spend around GBP£200.

There are alternatives:

1) Buy a Shavettewhich uses disposable blades so no need for a strop, strop pastes and a honing stone. Shavette's are a great way to learn your technique before taking the plunge and buying a straight razor kit. A Shavette and blades will set you back £30.00 plus £3.50 for blades.

2) Opt for a safety razor with adjustable settings such as the Merkur Progress, this highly rated razor has adjustable settings so you get the shave you want every time. Set it low for a mild shave and set it high for an aggressive, close shave. The Progress is only £42.50 plus blades, this razor will last many, many years, the built quality is superb.

Buy a shaving brush and a good quality cream too as they contribute enormously to getting a good shave. A good quality brush and cream set costs only £34.05.  The Progress will cope with your partners tough beard.

I hope this helps Nicola, please don't hesitate to call me on 00 44 141 880 3040 or email us on info@executive-shaving.co.uk should you have any questions or if I can be of further assistance to you. Best wishes Brian.
