Review: The Titanium Outlaw Synthetic Shaving Brush

I no longer use badger hair shaving brushes. I already own an Alpha 400 Synthetic 2-piece shaving brush and I really like it, I also have a Muhle Travel Brush, a nice green, white and gold coloured brush (manufacturer unknown) and an Executive Shaving Big Jock. These three synthetic fibre brushes are all I thought I would ever need until I saw the Alpha Outlaw Synthetic in Titanium!

There cannot possibly be a better looking yet practical shaving brush like this in the world.

The handle sits perfectly in the hand, the synthetic fibres are ultra-soft and the titanium looks like something from a sci-fi movie.

Let’s start with the titanium handle, one of the most notable advantages of titanium is its strength. It's among the strongest and most durable metals on the planet, which is why it's used in so many industrial applications. Titanium has the highest strength-to-density ratio of any metallic element on the periodic table. Additionally, it is resistant to corrosion, staining and scratches.

Moving onto the knot, this is the very best knot I have ever used, it’s super-soft on the skin but due to the high density of bristles (how do they manage it?), the knot has excellent backbone. Alpha tells me that the synthetic fibres are Generation Four (G4), these fibres are without a shadow of a doubt the finest I have ever handled. Has any other brand produced the perfect pairing of super-soft tips and bristle density to this level? I doubt it.

The super-ergonomic handle is designed to be palm held. The belly of the brush sits nicely in your hand and your fingers are drawn automatically to the neck. This brush feels superb in the hand and it's so easy to grip thanks to the seven, beautifully engineered, deep flutes.

I used the brush first with The Executive Shaving Company Fuar Ach Snog Shaving Cream, I face lathered and an absolutely superb lather was produced within a few seconds, then using my trusty OneBlade Genesis I did my standard 2-pass shave. The brush performed admirably but was it really tested when lathering such a top-notch cream?

Day two, I thought let’s see how good this brush really is, so I used my Martin de Candre Rose Shaving Soap, this is still a fairly new soap and it’s still hard on top. I wet the brush, swirled it around the surface of the soap a few times and face lathered and once again the brush produced a rich, creamy lather as you would expect from such a luxury soap.

Day three, this time I thought I would try a budget soap and I used Cella which is as cheap as chips and not one of my favourites. However, as before the brush made short work of delivering copious amounts of lather onto my skin.

So, no matter what I used – a cream and hard soap and a soft budget soap the brush performed admirably.  The only thing that may spook men who are used to seeing a badger brush loaded up with lather and much of it being on the outer surfaces of the bristles will note that with this brush the lather tends to sit inside the knot yet it’s there and it applies lather to the skin. Each time I had finished shaving I squeezed out huge amounts of unused lather so when using this brush don’t be tempted to load up the brush more than once, the lather is there inside the knot.

A brush like this deserves to arrive with the buyer well-presented and Alpha don’t disappoint with a velvet-like pouch and a real bamboo wood outer case. Both featuring Alpha branding.

Summing Up
The Alpha Titanium Outlaw in Synthetic is expensive to buy at £185.00 but consider the magnificent quality of flawless engineering, the bomb-proof titanium body and that fabulous knot of bristles and frankly, this brush is in my opinion value for money. Think Rolex, Aston Martin and Gucci, now add the Alpha Outlaw in Titanium!
