Recommended Safety Razors For Beginners
Our Recommended Safety Razors for Beginners
What safety razor do you recommend for a beginner?
Not a day passes when we don’t get asked that specific question.
The answer depends on a number of factors including:
- Do you have large hands?
- Do you have a tough stubble?
- How often do you shave?
- Do you have any shaving or non-shaving related skin problems?
- What razor do you currently use?
- What do you want to start shaving with a safety razor?
For the sake of this article, we will assume that the enquirer is a Gillette Fusion user who is fed up with paying rip-off prices for blades, he shaves five times weekly, he has medium tough beard bristles, no skin problems and average size hands.
In this case, we recommend you consider any of the following three razors:
Timor Closed Comb Safety Razor
The Timor Closed Comb, (pictured) this is the best looking of the three razors and it’s slightly more expensive than the other two but the price does include a packet of 10 Timor Razor Blades. What I particularly like about the Timor is the low-profile head which makes shaving under the nose, shaving sideburns and beard lines easier than the Muhle R106, the Merkur 34c and others which all have more bulbous shaped heads. When you then factor in the slightly longer handle and the intricate, highly detailed, engineered, grooves on the handle you’ve got a first class, beautifully made razor here. There is more to the Timor than the other two razors, it’s slightly heavier due to the fact it’s made from a zinc die-cast head with a solid brass handle, the Muhle R106 and the Merkur 34c are made from a lightweight metal alloy. Finally, the Timor head is wider than its competitors, it’s wide enough to fully cover the razor blade making it safer to use.
Handle Length: 80mm
Razor Weight: 90g
Made in Germany, current price £36.00.

Muhle R106 Closed Comb Safety Razor
The Muhle R106, this razor shares the same price, dimensions and head as the top-selling Muhle R89. The R89 has a shiny, chrome plated handle, the R106 has a non-slip, black coloured resin handle which delivers a firm grip even when using with wet hands. The R106 looks good and comes with a range of options including matching shaving brushes in badger and synthetic fibre hairs a razor and brush stand and a razor only stand. Ideal for newbies the R106 is very mild shaving and easy to use. If in time, a closer shaving razor is needed the head can be changed for the Muhle R41 which shaves as close as a safety razor can.
Handle Length: 85mm
Razor Weight: 65g
Made in Germany, current price £32.50.

Merkur 34C Closed Comb Safety Razor
The Merkur 34C, sometimes known as the 34HD, HD standing for heavy duty. The only thing heavy duty about this razor is its rugged looks. It shaves extremely well and many newbies buy this razor and never feel the need to move onto another razor in the future. It has an old-school, traditional look to it, not surprising as the design dates from the 1950s. it has never needed an update which tells you a lot about the design. It’s smaller than most other safety razors yet the knurled handle delivers a reassuring firm grip.
Handle Length: 75mm
Razor Weight: 80g
Made in Germany, current price £34.95.

Remember getting a close yet comfortable daily shave is not just down to the razor you use. You’ll also need a quality shaving cream or shaving soap and they lather up best when applied with a shaving brush. The blades you use are also important, Timor, Muhle and Merkur manufacture their own blades but having tried them we suggest you start off with Personna blades. They are good for at least four close shaves and a pack of 10 only costs £3.50.
