Only one way to find out I thought – try it. To shave with I used a Double Edge Muhle R89 a razor I use often and a new Timor Razor Blade.

Truefitt & Hill No. 10 Finest Shaving Cream is enriched with willow bark, borage oil, meadowfoam seed oil, sweet almond oil and olive oil. All of which are blended to produce a really nice, smooth cream which is meant lubricate the razor blade and provide a smooth, comfortable and close shave.

I plopped a small amount of cream into a lathering up bowl and lathered up using my trusty Dovo Silvertip Shaving Brush. Within seconds I had lathered up a rich smooth cream. I had expected a profuse, bubbly cream; instead Truefitt & Hill No. 10 Finest Shaving Cream goes onto the face rather like rich emulsion paint. Nothing wrong with that as the razor blade really did glide and cut the bristles easily, without pulling and without any discomfort whatsoever.
There is no overpowering scent from Truefitt & Hill No. 10 Finest Shaving Cream other than a pleasant citrusy scent that was very pleasing indeed.
This cream is good, very good in fact. It did contribute greatly to a very close shave.

Paraben, alcohol and sulphate free this cream is fantastic for anyone who suffers from any shaving related skin problems.
It’s reasonably priced at only £8.00 for 200 mls, it should last at least a couple of months as it spreads so well on the face.

A definite winner, I like it and I’ll  recommend this cream to anyone – but skin problem sufferers in particular.

Thiers-Issard Hand Made Boxed Oak Wing G Razor Set

Hand Made in France, this is the beautiful Limited Edition Oak Wing G Boxed Straight Razor Set.
The G is a homage to Grelot - an earlier brand of straight razors. Only 450 Oak Wing Boxed G’s Straight Razors were made, each set is individually numbered. This set is a collectors piece today, it will become even more valuable in the future. The razor scales are made from chocolate coloured Figured Maple. The box is made from the same Figured Maple but with a simple varnish finish.

The Razor
The Limited Edition Oak Wing G Boxed Straight Razor Set is as much a work of art as a razor! It’s 151 mm long and 7/8ths wide, the blade is made from rare, forged Carbonsong C 135 Steel. Finished in a faultless mirror finish with an amazing, intricate custom engraved design cut into the spine of the blade.
The custom engraving is excusivley for this razor, it features the letter G (for Grelot) flanked by bells, oak leaves and arabesques (see image). Only Thiers-Issard razors are finished to this high artistic standard. The thumb notch and upper side of the shank have been machine serrated to provide a safe and comfortable grip.

The Scales
The Figured Maple Wood scales were specially produced for the Oak Wing G razors , The scales have been pressure treated with a plastic resin and pigmented dye, giving extra strength and depth of colour. The plastic / dye combination has been forced into the cellular structure of the wood which makes them extremely resistant to water damage.
These scales are not ’stamina wood scales’ - they are made from solid, Figured Maple.

The Box
The stunning box is made from the same Figured Maple as the razor scales, this box is truly beautiful. Unlike the scales, the box has not been dyed - only varnished to give an interesting colour contrast to the razor scales.

The lid of the box is inlaid in polished brass with the Thiers-Issard Silverwing Emblem which includes the number of your limited edition set. Lined in red velvet, the box also benefits from brass hinges.

Goodfella Safety Razor Review

The Goodfella Safety Razor is a new take on the traditional safety razor.
But how does the newbie Goodfella Safety Razor actually perform?
The Goodfella Safety Razor is up against some serious opposition from market leaders Merkur, Muhle, Parker, Feather and Cobra and a few others.

I rated the Goodfella out of 10 on the following criteria:

1) Closeness of the shave after two passes shaving with the grain
2) Ease of use
3) Affordability
4) Looks

I deliberately didn’t shave for three days so the Goodfella had a good, heavy growth to contend with. Along with the Goodfella, I used Taylors Jermyn Street Shaving Cream and a new Merkur razor blade.
The first thing that strikes you about the Goodfella is its size, it’s small, much smaller and lighter than say the Merkur 34C and the Muhle R89, it’s also open comb.
I had my doubts that two passes with this little razor would do the job.
The first pass went fine, nice and quick, the Goodfella is very manoeuvrable, it easily shaved my problem areas such as directly under the nostrils and under the chin.
The Goodfella coped well with my stubble and shaved with that familiar rasping sound that is much loved by most wet shaving enthusiasts.
I was pleasantly surprised by the closeness of the first pass – not bad at all.
The second pass was done much slower, taking my time, applying minimal pressure to the razor, allowing the razorblade to do the work.
The thinness of the shaving head allows the razor blade to get right under the nostrils and shaving the bottom of my sideburns was so quick and easy again due to the thinness of the head.
The second pass was good, very good in fact, a third final pass would be required to get the ‘baby bum smooth’ feel that wet shavers crave but most guys would settle for the shave I got without the need for a third pass.

So, how did the Goodfella score?
1) Closeness of shave is very good. 9/10

2) Ease of use- The smallness of the razor may not suit everyone especially those with big hands but in return you get great manoeuvrability. Changing blades is easy with the Goodfella,  hold the head and turn the handle ant clockwise, the head loosens off allowing simple, quuick and easy blade changing. 8/10

3) Affordability – not cheap at Pounds 63.70 but the Goodfella comes with a lifetime guarantee. It’s also  cheaper than the Merkur VISION, the Feather and the Cobra. 8/10

4) Looks – fantastic looking, the chrome plating is beautifully reflective and the ‘G’ Goodfella logo on the head is a nice finishing touch. Comes in all chrome and
chrome with a black head. Both are great lookers. 10/10

Summary
I like it! It has striking good looks, shaves well and has a lifetime guarantee.

My overall rating is 35/40. Well done Goodfella!
My only criticism is I personally prefer a closed comb razor – come on Goodfella you know it makes sense!

Many years of poor practice have turned shaving into a banal chore as opposed to the pleasurable experience it should be. The shaving tips outlined below will help you to select the products you need and the techniques to be employed for the most comfortable shave possible.

Okay, here goes…… 

Firstly, you will need is a good quality razor! Whether you opt for a straight razor, a double edged safety razor or a Gillette razor, it is important to find a razor that you feel comfortable using, that has the correct weight and balance to stop you ‘dragging’ it across your face. If you choose a safety razor or Gillette razor, you must remember to change your blades regularly - blunt blades are a major cause of cuts, irritation and razor burn.

Once you have selected your razor, we recommend you follow these steps:

Step 1 - Prepare

It is very hard to achieve a comfortable shave if you do not prepare properly. The best time to shave is during, or just after a hot shower as the heat will soften the beard and open the pores. The use of an effective pre-shave oil will also lubricate the face and soften the beard further. This allows the razor to glide across the face, getting even closer to the skin allowing for smoother results.

Step 2 - Apply Shaving Cream/Soap

Using a soft shaving cream or a hard shave soap will moisturise, lubricate and nourish the face whilst shaving. The cream or soap should be applied using a shaving brush. Shaving brushes will lift each individual hair to ensure a smoother shave.

Step 3 - Shave

The best technique is to glide the razor over the skin whilst holding the skin taut with your free hand. We recommend that you shave with and then across the grain of the beard, but not necessarily against it (shaving against the grain is what causes ingrown hairs). For a smooth shave remember to never use a blunt razor - this can lead to razor burn and skin irritation.    

Step 4 - Soothe and Moisturise

After shaving, rinse your face with cold water to close the pores of the skin then pat dry. Some men will now choose the use a splash on aftershave product, however, it should be remembered that it is very important to use a soothing aftershave balm that will help to moisturise and aid the healing of the skin.

• Rooney Shaving Brushes are know throughout the world for their luxury brushes, they’ve been around for 200-years plus and it shows in the hand made, elegant and distinctive brushes they produce in England. Excellent at lifting the hair off my face thus facilitating the perfect BBS shave.
• Merkur Shaving Brush – I use this Silvertip Badger brush sparingly as I love it so much I don’t want to become over familiar with it, I know this is a bit daft but hey ho, there you go.
• Hugo Boss Aftershave – a great manly fragrance from one of the worlds great design houses. Unfortunately, we don’t sell this aftershave as we cannot source a competitive price for it.
• Pinaud Clubman Virgin Island Bay Rum Splash, this reminds me of when as a wee boy the barber would dab some of this on the back of my neck just as he did with the grown ups, the scent is aromatic  with a hint of a tropical breeze. At only £8.99 for 177ml this is a great buy.
• Cyril R Salter Styptic Pencil – always handy to have around in case of little nicks and cuts. wet it slightly, apply to the cut and the bleeding stops.
• Taylor of Old Bond Street Alum Bloc, I use this after shaving and rinsing my face, rub it on the chin and neck to close the pores and the antiseptic qualities ensure you finish your shave off in a clean hygienic manner. 100% natural and only £8.99 this will last around 18-24 months, possibly more.

After years of trying to get the shave that suits me best I think I’ve finally found it!

For lots of wet shaving enthusiasts, Merkur shaving is the only true way to shave and the Merkur 39 Barber Pole Slant is up there as one of the best performing double edge safety razors available on the on the market today.

Almost 70% of men in the UK suffer from some form of shaving irritation either regularly or at least once in their life. These ailments brought on by shaving can be caused by a number of factors from skin type to hair type.

The most common cause of shaving irritation and other skin irritations is a lack of lubrication whilst completing a shave. Most standard foam based creams are entirely inadequate for lubricating and protecting the face whilst shaving. This in turn causes the razor to drag across the face and hair follicles, removing an excess amount of skin cells and causing hair follicles to cut unevenly, this in turn can lead to ingrown hairs especially on sufferers of sensitive skin.

Shaving irritation advice and complimentary shaving treatments

A way to prevent shaving irritation from happening is to use an effective pre shave oil and a quality shaving cream and soap. Here the pre shave oil will lubricate and moisturise your face, softening and straightening facial hair allowing the razor to glide effortlessly across the face. However skin irritation can also be due to a person’s skin type and unfortunately many people will always suffer some sort of reaction to shaving. Primarily waxing is a cosmetic treatment that removes unwanted body hair through the application of heated wax and either paper or cloth strips.  Specially formulated waxes are applied to the hair removal area, and then a paper or cloth strip is firmly applied to that.  The wax is then allowed to cool, and then the strip is pulled off in a very quick motion taking the hair, root and all with it.  The waxing process however can be anywhere from uncomfortable to downright painful.

Although there may be some pain involved waxing can produce astounding results.  The hair takes anywhere from two to eight weeks to grow back, and many times when it does it is much finer.  Someone who repeatedly uses a waxing treatment for hair removal may find that after several years, the hair simply stops growing back at all.

There are some uncomfortable side effects to waxing, however.  The most common are redness, skin irritation, and slight swelling in the waxed area.  You can also end up with ingrown hair, bumps and even pimples.  A few very unlucky could get an infection in their follicles called folliculitis.  Some wax and hard waxes and skin types just simple do not mesh well and can result in bleeding or even the removal of skin in places.

Most people, however, never have more than a few minutes of mild pain immediately after the waxing process.  This is normal, as is some slight redness.  Using a mild wax lotion exfoliant a few times during the first week helps to control ingrown hair.

To reduce the pain associated with waxing, take a Tylenol or ibuprofen tablet at least half an hour before your appointment.  You can also apply a numbing spray just before applying the wax from the wax heater, allow it time to take effect and if it has any oils in it, a quick wash with soap and water to get that off will help the wax cling to the hair better.  If this is the first time you are waxing go to a professional, don’t try it at home.  Another trick used frequently is to use a warm wet washcloth on the area.  The heat will help the pores to expand making it easier for the hair to come out.

You love the feel of your legs right after using a waxing heater, but you just can’t afford to keep going to a salon to have it done.  There are waxing kits available for the do-it-yourself waxer at every discount store and drugstore.  Many of these kits claim you can just heat the wax in your microwave and you will get a great wax for far less.  If that’s true, then why do they make waxing heaters?

Unlike a wxing heater a microwave can heat the wax unevenly, this in turn makes the user a prime candidate for a burn or a really bad wax.  If the wax is too hot, serious burns can happen; if the wax is too cold it may not adhere to the unwanted hair like it should, and that can cause greater skin irritation.  Using a waxing heater will make it easier to achieve a more regulated temperature throughout the product and keep it from getting to hot.  In addition, the wax will not cool off to the point where you will need to reheat it.

Simply turn off the waxing heater when you are done and close the top if it has one, or seal the wax can.  The wax is ready for you when you are, and you won’t have to worry about it spilling when you are trying to remove it.  Let it cool while still in the heater.

Many women choose to not use a waxing heater and they do just fine with the at-home wax kits.  Eventually, though, those same women do spend a few pounds on a waxing heater kit for several reasons. Using waxing heaters is a sanitary way to keep your waxing supplies together ready for your next use.  There are waxing heater models that actually have storage space for extra spatulas and even strips.
